Canadian Music Awards
Toronto, ON – Award-winning Canadian singer/songwriter and producer Carolyn Dawn Johnson has been nominated for Country Album of the Year at the 2011 JUNO Awards. The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) made the announcements today at a press conference held at The Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
Winners will be declared at the JUNO Gala Dinner and Awards on March 26 and the 2011 JUNO AWARDS will be broadcast live in Toronto from the Air Canada Centre on March 27.
A delighted Johnson states, “I am ecstatic that my album Love Rules is being recognized because I love, love, love this music. I am thankful that CARAS & the community of my peers chose to nominate it because it was truly the hardest project I’ve ever worked on, but just might be the one I’m most proud of. Thank-you sooooo much.” Read the rest of this entry »

St. Albert Gazette

Yowsers, can that girl belt it out.
Even before Carolyn Dawn Johnson had bounded onto the Arden stage this past Friday night, the sold-out house was cheering her on.
She wasn’t just another singer on a road stop flogging a new album. The Nashville-based Westlock transplant was family.
Johnson had returned home to the “old stomping grounds,” and an applause-heavy red carpet was laid out for Johnson and her four sidemen — Ricky Free (drums), Cory Ishee (guitar), Nolan Werner (bass) and Derek Wells (mandolin).
Although the country singer had temporarily hung up her spurs for four years, she still knew how to work the country crowd, delivering a lyrical catalogue that focused on love, family and domesticity. Read the rest of this entry »

on tour
By Jeff Dedekker – Leader Post
Carolyn Dawn Johnson proudly wears the label of singer-songwriter and she’s not prepared to put one part of her career on hold for the other.
Johnson, who is scheduled to play the Casino Regina Show Lounge on Wednesday, loves both aspects of her career equally.
“Yes, I definitely love both sides of it,” said Johnson in a recent telephone interview from her Nashville home. “I like to be the songwriter who gets to stay home and I like to go out there and play for people. I feel like writing these songs and then never getting a chance for them to be heard would be a shame. I love to go out there and sing them.
“I’m proud of this record and I want people to hear it. I hope people will be affected by these songs when I sing them live.”
Johnson released Love Rules on Aug. 10, her first album after a three-year sabbatical to start a family with her husband Matt Fisher.

Heath McCoy – Calgary Herald
To focus on the hard-won career, or put it on hold to raise a family?
That’s a crossroads familiar to so many women in this day and age — and celebrated Canadian country singer-songwriter Carolyn Dawn Johnson was no different when she decided to put on the brakes and start her family a couple of years back.
But given the fast, hyper-competitive nature of the music business — and her status as a public figure a considerable fan base wants to hear from — it’s fair to say the pressures on Johnson were felt with a particular edge.

CCMA Preview
After a four-year child-rearing hiatus, singer is still Canada’s country darling
By Fawnda Mithrush, edmontonjournal.com
With 16 Canadian Country Music Awards already lined up on her mantle, Carolyn Dawn Johnson’s current nomination for Female Artist of the Year — a title she’s won four times since 2001 — should come as no shock to her fans.
Or maybe it should, considering that Johnson, who is originally from Grande Prairie, has been on a professional hiatus since 2007.
For nearly four years, she’s been preoccupied with raising her two children in Nashville while plotting her eventual public comeback from her home studio. Read the rest of this entry »

Alanna Conaway – The Boot
Carolyn Dawn Johnson has found two new loves to compete with her first love, music. The Canadian-born songbird has become a mother twice since releasing her last album, 2008′s ‘Love and Negotiation.’ But somehow in between diaper duty and preparing for the birth of her second child, she found time to pour her heart and soul into new music for her fourth studio album, ‘Love Rules,’ released this month.
“Keeping up with being a writer and making a record and trying to be the best mom I could was tiring,” she tells The Boot. “It was pretty tough, but when I got close to the end of [making this album] and all of the songs and the products were coming back all done, I got excited and emotional about it again.”
