An Alberta songstress will be throwing her voice behind the Lloydminster Community Youth Centre (LCYC) this weekend as the agency raises more funds for its new location. On Sept. 13, Grande Prairie-native Carolyn Dawn Johnson will be bringing her musical talents to the Vic Juba Community Theatre at 8 p.m.

Tracy Klotz, vice-chair of the LCYC board and event chair, said proceeds will be going towards moving the cramped centre into a larger facility, as well as costs associated with renovations of the new spot. He added this kind of event could become a more permanent fixture on Lloydminster’s event calendar.

But with the award-winning singer’s performance on the horizon, Klotz said he couldn’t be happier. “Carolyn Dawn Johnson is the 2012 female country music (artist) of the year,” he said. “I’m hearing nothing but fantastic comments about what kind of a person she is and it’s very suitable to our type of community involvement, our type of centre and things like that. “Everybody that’s involved in the concert and has been talking about it is tremendously excited to know because she’s a fantastic performer and very giving of her fans.” Tickets cost $40 and Klotz said it would be “amazing” if in excess of $20,000 could be raised from this event. The life and career of hit singer-songwriter Carolyn Dawn Johnson has been a steady climb to the top, as she remains a staple in the country music industry nearly 20 years after setting out to pursue her dreams in Nashville.

Just four short years after making the 60-hour drive from Vancouver, BC Canada to Music City U.S.A., Johnson scored her first chart-topping hit as a songwriter when Chely Wright took “Single White Female” all the way to No. 1. The success then led to publishing deals and cuts with several other artists like Patty Loveless, Mindy McCready, Kathy Mattea, Pam Tillis, SheDaisy Lila McCann, Suzy Bogguss, Linda Davis, Jo Dee Messina & more. Johnson was named Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year in 2000 by Music Row, and has continued to carry that title well as one of the town’s most loved and respected tunesmiths around.

“I love this town and all the creative people that really make it happen,” says Johnson. “I never seem to run out of inspiration. The music community has always included me and uplifted me, and I’m extremely blessed and thankful.” Read the rest of this entry »

Tera Lee on CDJ

Tera Lee  – KG Mornings

I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard her music. It was Keith and Lana Floen’s annual musician’s picnic on Sunday of the Labour Day Long weekend. There was a break in the jamming, so Country 105 was playing over the PA. I was actually chatting with Lana when ‘Georgia’ came on the radio. She quickly stopped in the middle of our conversation and said, “have you heard this yet”. I hadn’t, so we took a break from chatting and listened together. I’ve always respected Lana’s ear for music, and when the song was over, she had not let me down. She went on to tell me what little she knew of this singer … she was Canadian and a writer who had got an American deal.
CCMA’s were only a week away and you can always count on the record companies to parade their latest and greatest around, introducing them to the industry. I’m not sure at what point it was in the weekend, but it was during Country Music Week 2000 that I experienced the complete artistry of Carolyn Dawn Johnson. It was just her, with her accoustic and I totally remember being blown away overall, but did take special note of how she could really play guitar… I hate to say for a woman, but a chick that can really play always scores points with me.

Carolyn Dawn Johnson proudly wears the label of singer-songwriter and she’s not prepared to put one part of her career on hold for the other.

Johnson, who is scheduled to play the Casino Regina Show Lounge on Wednesday, loves both aspects of her career equally.

“Yes, I definitely love both sides of it,” said Johnson in a recent telephone interview from her Nashville home. “I like to be the songwriter who gets to stay home and I like to go out there and play for people. I feel like writing these songs and then never getting a chance for them to be heard would be a shame. I love to go out there and sing them.

“I’m proud of this record and I want people to hear it. I hope people will be affected by these songs when I sing them live.”

Johnson released Love Rules on Aug. 10, her first album after a three-year sabbatical to start a family with her husband Matt Fisher.

CCMA Preview

After a four-year child-rearing hiatus, singer is still Canada’s country darling
By Fawnda Mithrush,

With 16 Canadian Country Music Awards already lined up on her mantle, Carolyn Dawn Johnson’s current nomination for Female Artist of the Year — a title she’s won four times since 2001 — should come as no shock to her fans.

Or maybe it should, considering that Johnson, who is originally from Grande Prairie, has been on a professional hiatus since 2007.

For nearly four years, she’s been preoccupied with raising her two children in Nashville while plotting her eventual public comeback from her home studio. Read the rest of this entry »
